Starting guitar can feel overwhelming, but with a structured approach you can play your first songs within a month. The first week is all about getting comfortable with the instrument. Learn proper posture, how to hold the guitar, and practice fretting individual notes cleanly.
Focus on learning three essential open chords: G major, C major, and D major. These three chords alone can play hundreds of popular songs. Practice transitioning between them slowly until the movement becomes smooth. Don't worry about speed — accuracy comes first.
Now that your fingers know where to go, it's time to add rhythm. Start with a simple down-strum pattern, then progress to down-up patterns. Practice with a metronome starting at 60 BPM and gradually increase the tempo as you gain confidence.
By the end of week four, you should be able to play a complete song using the chords you've learned. Choose something simple that you love — familiarity with the song makes learning it much easier and more enjoyable.
Once you've mastered the basics, you're ready for barre chords, fingerpicking, and more complex songs. At Rhythm & Melody, our guitar instructors guide you through each stage with personalized attention and regular performance opportunities at our jam sessions.
